Chemistry with University of Oxford

Life Science, Healthcare and Social Care
The annual Bucks Skills Show helps young people explore careers and work out how to get there. But 2020 was different: instead of the usual face-to-face format, we streamed live inspirational employers into lessons to show how they use curriculum subjects in their every-day job.

This interactive lesson in Chemistry explores Atomic structure & the periodic table with University of Oxford.

The Brennan Research Group – University of Oxford

The Brennan Lab forms part of the Centre for Medicines Discovery (CMD), a multi-disciplinary Institute within the University of Oxford which focuses upon translational activities to catalyse the discovery of new medicines. Professor Paul Brennan, the group leader, worked for several years as a senior scientist in various pharmaceutical companies, including six years leading a medicinal chemistry team at Pfizer.

The primary focus of the Brennan Group is the design of probes and inhibitors to investigate the intricate workings of human proteins and cells, with particular interest in epigenetics and dementia. As part of the CMD, their goal is to develop these compounds into potential therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, or cancers such as multiple myeloma.

They form part of a large network of research groups in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University that are using a variety of biological and chemical techniques to discover new cellular targets to combat as yet untreatable diseases.
