History with Historic England

The annual Bucks Skills Show helps young people explore careers and work out how to get there. But 2020 was different: instead of the usual face-to-face format, we streamed live inspirational employers into lessons to show how they use curriculum subjects in their every-day job.

This interactive lesson in History explores Conflict and Tension; the inter war years, 1918 - 1939 and 1890-1945 with Historic England.

Historic England is responsible for helping people to access and interpret the resources held in the Historic England Archive. During this lesson students will examine primary source evidence from the 1940s, looking not just at the damage done to British towns and cities, but also the ways in which they tried to defend themselves from aerial attack.

Speaker:

Catherine McHarg, Education Manager from Historic England.

She will use historic aerial photographs to help students understand the impact of the Battle of Britain and aerial bombardment during the Second World War. She has worked in the archaeology and heritage sector for 20 years. Following a degree in Archaeology and Geography from Southampton University, Catherine worked as a field archaeologist before pursuing a career in heritage education, working for a range of different organisations.
