Why a degree apprenticeship might be right for you

Deciding what to do when you leave school or college is tough – especially when the benefits of university are recited more loudly and frequently than some of the other equally rewarding paths. Take degree apprenticeships, for example. Did you know you can gain a full undergraduate or master’s degree while earning money?

Degree apprenticeships take three to six years to complete, depending on the course level, when you’ll spend about 20% of your time studying and the other 80% working. Let’s turn up the volume on the advantages of this arrangement.

  1. The prospect of paying back student loans can put some people off studying for a degree, but this isn't the case with degree apprenticeships. Not only will you get paid a salary like a normal employee (the average salary for a degree apprenticeship is £23k a year), your degree is fully paid for by your employer and the Government, so there’s no cost to you

  1. Degree apprenticeships bridge the gap between theory and practice. As you work with seasoned professionals on daily challenges and opportunities, you’ll gain experience with real-world relevance, which fosters a deeper understanding of the industry.

  1. When it comes to looking for a job in the future, the experience and skills you gain while working as an apprentice will provide a competitive edge over graduates from full-time courses, who wouldn't have had as many opportunities to use what they learnt in the workplace.

  1. Interacting with professionals, mentors and fellow apprentices allows you to establish valuable connections, which can be instrumental in securing future jobs. If you make a good impression on your apprenticeship provider, they may even offer you a permanent role at the end of the course.
